CRESTRON IS AN AMERICAN BRAND, WELL KNOWN FOR THEIR WIDE RANGE OF HIGH-QUALITY AUTOMATION AND CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR BUILDINGS. DUE TO THE EVOLVING MEETING ENVIRONMENT, THEY NEEDED SUPPORT IN DEVELOPING A NEW CONFERENCING SYSTEM. AT THAT POINT CRESTRON DECIDED TO PARTNER UP WITH US AND WE STARTED A TRANSATLANTIC COOPERATION.

Conferencing with people who are not in one location, via telecommunication systems helps save significant time and travel efforts. Most of the conventional solutions in use provide enormous hurdles to actually connect people in an effective way though. Together with Crestron we have developed a hassle-free and intuitive business meeting environment.

AN EVOLVING ENVIRONMENT AND THE IMPACT ON PRODUCT DESIGN

The classic Crestron conferencing solution has been a permanently installed system, making use of the whole room. The classic conference room is changing, however. A range of different environments, more open spaces and smaller rooms are being used and this has created the need for new adaptive solutions. Another influencing factor is that people bring a range of devices into conference rooms to present their work or use their own interface. Laptops, Smartphones and other electronics are all used in a conference situation.

There was a need for an easy to install solution which is simple to operate in a range of contexts. It should fullfill the quality and usability standards typical for Crestron. The product needed to be different from the integrated, permanently installed gear previously used, but also avoid having to use many different cables, dongles and additional hardware. Additionally, Crestron has a wide range of product designs. For this reason, it was important to define consistent visual elements which can be used in future product setups for the Crestron enterprise range.

“Crestron has always had world class engineering, but we were in search of a world class partner to take us to a new level in industrial design as it relates the human experience.  Noto’s holistic approach accompanied by their aesthetic quality is helping to take us there.”

COLLABORATIVE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Putting together these requirements, our goal was to create an easy to install, all in one device which can be used without any additional monitors or peripherals. In order to achieve this goal, it was important to first define the product architecture to make the best use of the smallest available volume and an ergonomic interface.

Because more devices are used in a conference situation, there was a need for a range of ports, clean cable managment and a simple interface. The design language needed to be unobtrusive enough to allow the product to integrate itself into different environments while communicating the Crestron brand identity. Because the product represents a new category for Crestron, it was also important for it to be unique enough to communicate the Crestron brand identity.

All the internal components were systematically organized using simple volume models. Rearranging the product architecture, we could provide a wide range of solutions. Collaborating closely with the engineers at Crestron, we defined a component layout which allowed for the smallest possible device within the desired form.

HASSLE-FREE AND INTUITIVE PRODUCT DESIGN

The resulting design is defined by a wraparound bezel. It is used as the main structural element on which the components and housing are mounted. For ergonomic use, the display is situated in the center of the device, angled towards the main user. The ports are located on the bottom of the product. This allows the cable to be hidden when not in use. The most used cables can be lead through the front or back of the Mercury. This makes it fast and simple to connect an external device from anywhere around the conference table.

We are looking forward to the release of more great products, created in the collaboration between Crestron and Noto in the future.
